Has the thought ever crossed your mind that you might have the opportunity to entertain God’s angels? Hebrews 13:2 encourages us to be hospitable to strangers, for in doing so we might do just that! It really makes you think about how you treat everyone that you come in contact with. Also just to think about where that person is in their story.
I recently listened to a podcast on hospitality and decided to dive deep into its true meaning. (Feel free to listen to the Podcast by clicking HERE ) Hospitality is the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests according to Google. Think about those words: friendly, generous, reception. All have this feeling of being open and welcoming.
I’ve been pretty vocal about my beliefs on the “Love everyone and accept everyone” culture. The devil has done a fantastic job making what is wrong seem right by using this culture of acceptance. BUT… I must admit, I’ve seen this taken a little TOO FAR lately. While I do believe it’s important to stand up for what is right, I also believe the tone, posture, and execution should be done from a place of love, humility… AND HOSPITALITY.
How many lives are changed because of arrogance, judgmental words, and a forced agenda? Taking on the “I’m right, you’re wrong” posture rarely, if ever, changes anyone’s mind. I’ve seen so many “keyboard warriors” sitting behind the comfort of their iPhone thinking they are going to change the world one Insta story or Tiktok video at a time. (and maybe some will!).
On the flip side, when you feel heard, loved, safe, and cared for by someone, you add value to their life and can even gain influence. Connection with humans has a much more solid and lasting effect.
I think right now, more than ever, we have the opportunity to put hospitality into practice. To receive people where they are and invite them to meet you and Jesus.
What does hospitality look like?
- Consideration. (FYI, this doesn’t mean you modify what the Bible says to fit others comfort level.)
- Humility.
- Empathy.
- Thoughtfulness.
- Openness.
- Gratitude.
- Show GRACE. Be kind with your words. Look for needs that need to be met and opportunities to show kindness.
This week, I want to challenge you to practice hospitality. LISTEN first, ask curious questions later, and ask God to show you the people around you that need the hospitality gifts and talents you have to offer.
You are loved,
