Are you righteous ALL THE TIME? Do you have it all figured out? No? You’re not alone. In the world of social media, it can be easy to get caught up in the comparison game. When looking at everyone else’s highlight reels, it is easy to start thinking that everyone else has it all together. I know you’ve heard the saying, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” It’s so very true. Comparing ourselves to others will steal our joy and skew our perspective. No one is posting pictures of their kids screaming or of themselves screaming back at their kids. No one posts those rough times. No one has it all together. Don’t believe that lie.
I’m ashamed to admit this, but I found myself in church a few weeks ago judging someone. The smell of alcohol can trigger judgment in me. I found myself sitting in church triggered by the smell of alcohol and cigarettes, and I wanted that person to leave. Since I’ve been focused on NOT doing this and asking God to open my eyes to the judgment I place on others, I caught myself quickly. (Thank you Lord for self-awareness.) God reminded me that EVERYONE has a calling. No one is better than anyone else. We all sin, fall short, make mistakes, and have struggles. We all need HIM. Some of us just have struggles that everyone can see. Some of us are able to hide our struggles. No one is struggle free.
The verse this week is the one God immediately put on my heart. “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Mark 2:17 This reminds me not only to keep my judgment in check; it gives me peace with my own life and shortcomings. I don’t have to be perfect. I need Him. We ALL need HIM. He’s called me: a sinner. AND… He’s called you, too.
